ProRail and the Safety Region Zuid-Holland Zuid (VRZHZ) will receive three fire-fighting vehicles for rail freight yard Kijfhoek and the Dordrecht-Zwijndrecht zone. It sounds so simple: a company is temporarily unavailable because of works nearby. But, says project manager Ben van Hooijdonk of ProRail: “If that company is in the Port of Rotterdam area, work is carried out seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Therefore, we consult with companies to hear when closures affect them the least and adjust our planning where possible.”

“It was crazy busy around Waalhaven South,” observes ProRail construction manager André Kop. Among other things, 11 points were replaced at this freight yard in early December. This completed the first work package of the Infrastructure in Order programme in which the infrastructure in the Rotterdam port area is being brought up to speed. In 2021, this meant the renewal of over 50 level crossings, the replacement of 25 points and over 10 kilometres of track.

The first year of that big catch-up is over, the activities of the second year started in the weekend of 5 and 6 March.
