Lots of work

Our contractors carried out a lot of work on the harbour railway line and freight yards. Points were replaced, level crossings were built in emergency routes, fire extinguishing pipes were flushed and maintenance work was carried out. Work was also carried out on the construction of fire extinguishing facilities and points heating.

Major decommissioning

To carry out all the work, it was necessary that no trains ran on the main line for 96 hours. This meant that carriers and shippers’ operations were at a standstill. Jessica van den Bosch, Director Account Management at ProRail: “We have a common interest in getting the infrastructure and facilities in the port area back on track, but such a major decommissioning does demand a lot from the parties involved. I am therefore pleased with their understanding and cooperation.”

Main track back in service

The main track was returned to service on the afternoon of Wednesday 8 June. Unfortunately, disruptions elsewhere in the area meant that the start-up of freight traffic was not entirely smooth. Meanwhile, work continued on parts of the yards.

At Botlek, for example, a total of 21 points were replaced as part of the superstructure renewal of work package 2 of the Infrastructure in Order programme. ProRail’s project manager Ben van Hooijdonk is satisfied: “After completion of this major outage, 90% of the work planned for this year has already been achieved. A great result!”

Working visit

On Monday 6 June, Ben already showed CEO John Voppen, CFO Mirjam Velthuizen and Jessica van den Bosch around. Hans-Willem Vroon, director of Railgood, and Niels Maat, operational director at carrier Lineas, were also there.
