Repair work on the Suurhoff Bridge
The Suurhoff Bridge in the Port of Rotterdam area spans the Hartel Canal. The bridge consists of a separate railway bridge and a separate road traffic bridge with interdependencies and was built between 1972-1973. Defects have recently been found on the road bridge. Following this, the railway bridge was also investigated. This survey revealed that this bridge has defects. The railway bridge has problems with stiffness and corrosion.
The improvements to the Suurhoff Bridge consist of repairing the bridge so that the currently imposed capacity constraints are rectified. The scope of the first works plan, grinding the welds, has already been contracted out.
For the second scope of works plan, the project notification has been approved. The budget has been requested for the project plan. Tendering started on 8 May. The work is expected to be carried out during 2023.
The aim of the second scope of works is to remove functional limitations, increase safety levels and strengthen the structure.
The second work plan is divided into:
- Reinforcing the main girders in the area around the long ‘tui’ connection
- Strengthening the two bolted divisions in the main girders
- Waterproofing of the structure
- Installing accessibility devices such as an inspection platform on the outside of main girder West and using manholes. For future maintenance to carry out inspections and repairs, one or more inspection van(s) will be used.
